TAFSIR NUR AL-IHSAN DAN TRADISI KEILMUAN ISLAM DI PATANI: METODOLOGI, CORAK, DAN IDEOLOGIDALAM VERNAKULARISASI TAFSIR MELAYU

Abstrak

The tradition of Qur'anic interpretation in Patani, southern Thailand, is not merely a religious practice, but a strategic component in the formation of the cultural and spiritual identity of the Malay-Muslim minority community. This study examines the dynamics of local interpretation teaching, particularly through Tafsir Nur al-Ihsan, in the context of educational modernization pressures, Thai language nationalization, and shifting preferences among the younger generation. The research method uses a qualitative approach with a case study design, utilizing primary data in the form of interpretation manuscripts, Islamic boarding school curriculum documents, and academic literature related to Islamic education in Patani, as well as secondary data from academic sources and boarding school archives. The results show that traditional Islamic boarding schools continue to maintain the Malay/Jawi language, classical texts, and the classical sorogan-bandongan method as a means of vernacularizing Islamic teachings, while also serving as a vehicle for preserving collective identity. The Nur al-Ihsan interpretation not only combines naqli and ijtihadi interpretations with a Sufi approach, but also functions as a pedagogical and ideological instrument that reinforces the closeness of sacred texts to local social life. Critical findings highlight contemporary dilemmas: the younger generation faces challenges in reinterpreting classical texts contextually, while the modernization of education and digitalization threaten the pedagogical relevance of old interpretations. This research has a dual contribution, namely: (1) filling the empirical literature gap on Malay Patani interpretation practices and the position of Tafsir Nur al-Ihsan in Islamic boarding schools; and (2) strengthening the theoretical discourse on the vernacularization of interpretation as a dynamic process that integrates tradition and pedagogical innovation. This study recommends the development of comparative studies of local interpretations in the archipelago, analysis of the impact of digitization, and strategies for revitalizing interpretation education to revive the capacity of the younger generation to interpret classical texts critically and contextually.
